Monday, Stanton ate breakfast and took Ralph to the fields. They had much to do, because Ralph hadn’t accomplished as much as he should have while Stanton had been courting and getting married.

When they came back for dinner, Beth had the garden prepared for planting cabbage and turnips. She also had dinner ready.

“You should have told me, and I’d have helped you prepare the soil,” Stanton told her.

“I knew you had enough to do, and I enjoyed working in a garden again.”

“Well, in the spring, when you’ll be planting more, I’ll use the oxen to plow it up.”

Stanton noticed Ralph’s surprised look when he tasted Beth’s cooking. She had outdone herself.

“I believe this is the best meal I’ve ever had,” the servant told her.

“Thank you,” she replied without turning around to look at him.
